Tending Tevet

Ariela’s New Moon Blends | Tending to Tevet

5779/2018

A tea that will warm you during this cold month, provide nourishment to the organ of the month, liver, and uplift your spirits in the darkness.

 Ginger

warm, stimulatingrhizome that gets things moving/flowing. She stimulates digestion and reduces stagnation, irritation and gas. Great for those chilly nights or crampy hours. “For pepper and ginger in their fresh state, the blessing is, ‘Who createst the fruit of the Earth.”

  Milk Thistle

An outstanding liver tonic, medicine and food. It is also known to have antiviral, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Anger is rooted in the liver, which is full of blood (Likutey Maharan). Rebbe Nachman taught, "The liver is called kaved, which also translates as "heavy" or "weighty." This is because it purifies blood that is weighted with unnecessary substances (Likutey Maharan)." In other words, the liver acts as our filtering system and helps us to detox and process both our blood and our emotions.

      Lemon Verbena

Your go to herb for uplifting the spirits and calming the anxious mind. A little extra sunshine in your mug, and she smells amazing too! Through suffering and sadness conflict comes into the world. Through joy, peace comes to the world.” (Sefer HaMidot)

Holy Basil

The one that you need when you are no longer able to deal with your stress, and you are constantly in a fight or flight mode. She will calm you and help you to tame your nervous system. In Jewish folklore, Basil is considered to give a person strength especially when they are fasting…

Kislev Dreaming

Though Mugwort does not appear in the Talmud, I find her actions on the soul to be very similar to our Bedtime Shema. As a dreaming ally, she helps us embark on our nighttime journeys, granting us access to a more vivid and tangible sleep time TV. The Shema that we say before bed has a similar purpose. We let go of the day and prepare for life on the pillow, " It is advisable for a person who goes to bed to take on the yoke of heaven (say the Shema) with full intention...for at the time of sleeping the whole world tastes the flavor of death...then every person's soul goes out and rises up, and the souls conceal themselves inside of the Shekinah (Zohar, Va'etchanan)." Whether it be hanging mugwort in your room or saying the Shema, we can choose to enter sleep with intention and purpose. There's so much to learn with our eyes closed! Perhaps try adding mugwort to your evening tea (or taking a bath infused with her leaves) and saying a line or two of the prayer....who knows what may happen?

2 Tablespoons of dried Mugwort (for dreaming)

2 Tablespoon Oat Tops (for a heartier tea)

2.5 Tablespoons of lemon balm (for brightening)

Pinch of lavender (for relaxing)

Place herbs in a half gallon jar. Boil water. Pour Boiling Water over the herbs and let sit overnight. Drink in the morning and store the rest in the fridge.

Yarrow Time | A tea for protection during the month of Cheshvan

Yarrow is an herb that helps us to create boundaries: physically, spiritually and emotionally. It protects us from absorbing negative energy and is particularly useful for folks who are easily influenced and depleted by others and their environment. It helps regulate both the digestive and circulatory systems and can also be used topically on wounds/cuts etc.

2.5 Tablespoons of Dried Yarrow flowers

2.5 Tablespoons of Mint (for opening; movement outwards; expansion)

2 Tablespoons of Chamomile (for closing; movement inwards; constriction)

Place herbs in a half gallon jar. Boil water. Pour Boiling Water over the herbs and let sit overnight. Drink in the morning and store the rest in the fridge.
